Anderson County High School students awarded trips to HDI Summer Leadership Camp

Two Anderson County High School students have been awarded trips to the HDI Summer Leadership Camp at the University of Kentucky. The Central Kentucky Educational Cooperative (CKEC) recently received an HDI grant for (RITT’s) Regional Transition Teams to develop trainings or avenues for students with disabilities to transition beyond high school. CKEC Transition Specialists Tara Wells and Candy Rollins (pictured on the right) set up a student contest which awarded students a summer camp to Sullican or the HDI Summer Leadership Camp. HDI Speakers Featured at Post-Secondary Education Workshop in Louisville

On Thursday, October 11,  HDI’s Teresa Belluscio and her two STEPS students, Emma Keyser and Brooke Wray, co-presented at a “Build Your Future” workshop at the McDowell Center in Louisville. The McDowell Center holds the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) and Kentucky Office for the Blind (OFB) Offices. The workshop was sponsored by the Center for Independent Living.

The speakers shared tips on choosing a college, how the disability resource center on campus can help, and being successful in college. They also discussed options for students with intellectual disabilities, and Emma and Brooke participated on the panel of current college students. Continue reading

HDI Hosts Summer Leadership Camp For High School Students with Disabilities

Last week, HDI hosted a Summer Leadership Experience Camp for high school students with disabilities. The camp, designed to prepare students for a successful transition to college, included presentations and activities to promote self-advocacy, self-determination, and leadership skills needed to succeed in college. Summer Leadership Training Camp 2017

The Summer Leadership Experience is a wonderful opportunity for high school juniors and seniors with mild to moderate disabilities to get a glimpse of the college experience for a week this summer. This program is for students who want to transition to higher education. The Summer Leadership Experience is a day camp that will begin at 9 am on Monday, July 17th and will run through Friday, July 21st.
