HDI CATS Expands Independence Through Assistive Technology Across Kentucky

The goal of HDI CATS (Center for Assistive Technology Services) is to help increase people’s independence using Assistive Technology (AT) across all life areas, such as daily living tasks, work, education, and participation in the community. CATS has a lending library that allows people to check-out equipment that will help them be more independent at no cost and use it in their daily life, so they can decide which devices work best. CATS also provides education, training, and demonstrations on AT for the people and professionals who make use of it. CATS is one of five regional centers in the Kentucky Assistive Technology Services Network (KATSNET), a statewide organization with a shared mission: improving independence and participation in every way possible for all Kentuckians. Through this mission, CATS changes lives every day. In 2025 alone, the center loaned out 442 items and gave away 1,581 pieces of assistive technology through its reuse program. That work put more than $407,000 worth of medical equipment directly into the hands of people who needed it—opening doors to independence, dignity, and participation that might otherwise have remained closed.

Behind these numbers are real people and real moments that matter. A father was able to use a power chair that made it possible for him to travel and share a long-anticipated football game with his son. A family found comfort and peace of mind when CATS staff helped them select the right adaptive car seat for their child and took the time to teach them how to use it safely and confidently. During a frightening health crisis, a husband was supported in finding essential mobility equipment for his wife—at a time when their options and resources were limited, but their need was great.

Stories like these reflect the heart of CATS’ work, and they continue to guide the center forward. In the coming year, CATS remains committed to helping more Kentuckians experience what access to the right assistive technology can make possible. To learn more, visit https://hdi.uky.edu/hdicats/.
