From Student to Sensei by Darrell Mattingly features a young man in a wheelchair wearing a white karate uniform.
In these five panels, Darrel first expresses his interest in karate after seeing a movie on TV. But his local martial arts dojo said he could not train Darrell.
In these five panels, Darrell went to his high school P.E. teacher but he was again told no.
In these five panels, Darrell attends school at the University of Kentucky. On the news, he heard about an adaptive Dojo.
It was exactly what Darrell had needed. He met other wheelchair users, made friends, and was accepted and encouraged.
Darrell thrived and got his orange, purple, blue, green, and then brown belts. He was the first to make it that far.
Darrell made it to a black belt. He now teaches others karate, including able-body students.
In this final series, Darrell talks about karate as more than a warrior's art; it's about being a scholar, too. This comic ends with Darrell welcoming a new student.
