Spring Seminar: Service Animals and the Americans with Disabilities Act

“Each day in the United States service dogs provide an invaluable service for their handlers.  Whether it is assisting someone who is blind to navigate busy streets, or alerting a handler with diabetes that their blood sugar has dipped dangerously low, service animals are essential partners in everyday life. There remains a great deal of confusion on the part of the public as to what is and is not a service animal as well as the rights and responsibilities handlers and business have under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws. This seminar will answer those questions.” – Barry Whaley

The last session of our Spring Seminar series was held on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 1:00 – 3:00pm EST about “Service Animals and the Americans with Disabilities Act .”

We learned more from experts Steve Kuusisto, Barry Whaley, and Jason Jones. The seminar was held at the UK Coldstream Research Campus Human Development Institute Training Room 1525 Bull Lea Road, Lexington KY. A link to the live video stream of the seminar was sent to registrants.

Kentucky Transition Summit Brings Community Together to Shares Ideas About Employment for Youth with Disabilities

“The author Zig Ziglar was often quoted as saying, ‘the first step in solving a problem is to recognize that it exists.’  At the Kentucky Transition Summit we were joined by nearly one hundred-fifty concerned students, advocates, educators, administrators, and family members who took the first step by recognizing that we simply do not do enough to help our students with the most significant disabilities take their role in the workplace or in continuing education. They then took the next step by helping us identify four to five hundred ideas that could move us toward solving the problem.” Jeff White, KentuckyWorks Project Director

The Inaugural KentuckyWorks Transition Summit and Community Conversation took place on February 28 in Frankfort. Representatives from across the state packed into the large conference room at the Administrative Office of the Courts Building to begin a dialogue as to how to improve job outcomes for students with disabilities transitioning from school to the workforce. UK HDI and Southeast ADA Center Renew Partnership to Provide ADA Guidance

The Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky and the Southeast ADA Center, a project of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University, have renewed their partnership to provide information and guidance on Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act to employers, people with disabilities, federal contractors, families, and service providers throughout the southeast United States. New Agreement Opens Up Dual Enrollment for High School Students with Disabilities

The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute and the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation have entered into a new agreement to pilot a dual/concurrent enrollment project for students receiving free and appropriate education under IDEA. The Dual Enrollment Pilot Project (DEPP) will develop dual enrollment projects for students on five college campuses in Kentucky. HDI Contributes to Southeast ADA Center Moneywise Conference in Atlanta about Financial Opportunities for People with Disabilities

HDI’s Barry Whaley worked alongside colleagues from the Southeast ADA Center of Friday, September 23 to host a full day conference: “The Moneywise: Financial Opportunities for People with Disabilities” at The Frazer Center in Atlanta. About 60 people attended the conference to learn about pursuing their financial and career aspirations; accessing financial, small business, educational, medical, and housing opportunities; and maximizing government benefits and establishing ABLE accounts.
