Opportunities for Disabled Researchers and Scholars: HDI Seminar Series

Panelists: Dr. Lynn C. Koch, Professor Emeritus, Department of Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders, Counselor Education Program, University of Arkansas-Fayetteville; Austin Nugent, Disability Program Administrator, Human Development Institute, University of Kentucky; Dr. James S. Krause, Distinguished University Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Associate Dean for Research in the MUSC College of Health Professions; Dr. Phillip Rumrill, Director of Research, Human Development Institute, University of Kentucky.

Session description: This panel discussion focuses on the growing movement to include members of the disability community in all aspects of research. The principles of Participatory Action Research will be reviewed as well as how they apply to disability pride and self-determination. Panelists will share their experiences and perspectives as researchers with lived experience with disability.

Objectives:

  • Review the current status of Participatory Action Research as it applies to Federally funded grants and contracts
  • Discuss how research led by and involving members of the disability community enriches the authenticity, veracity, and insight of scientific knowledge
  • Examine how the disability rights movement and disability pride have spurred the priority that is currently being placed on research led by disabled investigators

Continuing Education units are approved for Physical Therapy for a category 2 course. School Psychologists may receive up to 2 CPD clock hours.
