50th Anniversary Spotlight on Tina Buster

“Results”…Since I’ve been here I see the results of the hard work provided by the individuals employed here. I’ve seen how we’ve grown from the state of Kentucky throughout the US helping individual become better educators for individuals with disabilities. This is a place of “results;” we see them daily in the faces of those we’ve helped.
—Tina Buster, Human Development Institute Staff Associate

How did you come to know HDI?
HDI was my introduction to University of Kentucky. I had no idea of what HDI was about until after being hired. I believe I was hired because of my clerical skills and adaptability to various office equipment. Although I came here with no knowledge of this department, what made me stay was the involvement with the community to involve “ALL” in the community.
How long have you been at HDI and what is your role?
I’ve worked for HDI for the past 30 years as a Staff Associate.
During your time at HDI, of which accomplishments are you most proud?
Personally…I am most proud of my ability respect and interact with individuals of all walks of life. What I’ve learned here, I have implemented these values in my children.
Looking back, can you please share with us a fun or fond moment you had at HDI?
My earliest years with HDI, while located at the old Porter Memorial Building; we would have Christmas/end of the year parties. These parties would allow us to come together and just be ourselves. We would put on skits, some would sing and/or play the piano, we laughed & played games, and would conclude the event by coming together with a catered meal. Although we worked on different projects, we worked together to make sure the job was done and done correctly. I feel these gatherings helped us to be more of a unit.
Do you have any advice you would like to share with current and future staff and students at HDI?
“Make each day your masterpiece.” –John Wooden
What do you think the future holds for HDI?
I believe HDI has a great future providing we never forget our purpose, putting people first.
