Wishing Dr. Wright well at Gonzaga University

During his time at HDI, Director of Underserved Populations Dr. Nicholas Wright has enjoyed the opportunity to help bring underrepresented viewpoints to the forefront.

Now, he will bringing the same philosophy that made his mission so successful here to a new level.

“I will make the exciting transition into the role of Assistant Vice President in the Division of Inclusive Excellence at Gonzaga University,” Wright said. “I’m looking forward to contributing at the university senior leadership level in a mission-driven environment. At Gonzaga University, I will be focusing on the university-wide strategy to advance inclusive excellence in ways that center holistic belonging and authentic connection. This position also encourages me to continue my research surrounding multiraciality, disability equity, and belonging.”

Wright and his family will be moving to Spokane, Wash., where he and his family will enjoy both a beautiful part of the country and a future that aligns deeply with his own passions and philosophy.

“My student affairs philosophy focuses on creating more accessible and inclusive cultures for all individuals to express their most authentic identities. I am excited to continue this work, especially with students in higher education,” Wright said. “Connecting with new colleagues by working across divisions and supporting a culture of belonging, access, and accountability is what motivates me. In this leadership position, I am not just responding to issues, but proactively shaping the environment.”

While Wright is excited to start the next phase of his career, it’s bittersweet to leave HDI behind to pursue this next opportunity.

“Working with the Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky has been such a meaningful part of my professional journey. Advancing efforts that build inclusive communities, addressing disparities, and improving the lives of all people who experience disability across the lifespan gave me pride in my work each and every day,” he said.

He highlighted his work leading the Underserved Populations Engagement Committee as a particular point of pride.

“Being in this community of advocates who deeply understand barriers to marginalized communities inspired me. Many times, throughout our meetings, members discussed that this was an opportunity to breathe. They enjoyed being in this counterspace where they could be vulnerable, personable, and authentic,” he said.

Through work like that, Wright feels like he has made a positive impact on the culture at HDI.

“My goal was to build a more inclusive culture at the Human Development Institute and ensure it is a great place to work, learn, and grow,” he said. “Together, I believe we accomplished this goal.”

With that experience behind him, he feels well-equipped to do it on a university-wide scale at Gonzaga.

“This opportunity aligns deeply with my personal and professional values focused on social justice,” he said. “There is something powerful about being in a place where caring for the whole person and social justice are not only encouraged but embedded throughout every part of the institution.”
