Employment, including the kind of work one performs, influences one\u2019s personal identity, sense of belonging, and place in the world. Furthermore, employment represents one primary way of expressing the inherent human need to contribute \u2013 doing something that matters. Yet all too often, the significance of employment for people with disabilities has been unrecognized, ignored, or minimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported employment is designed to promote personalized employment opportunities for people with disabilities when they need support to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discover personal interests and contributions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find or negotiate a job that fits things people like to do and do well,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Become established as valued employees; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pursue job advancements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Kentucky is an <a href=\"https:\/\/kcc.ky.gov\/Vocational-Rehabilitation\/boards-and-councils\/Employment-First\/Pages\/default.aspx\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.employmentfirstky.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Employment First<\/a> State. We want to ensure that all Kentuckians with disabilities, regardless the impact of disability, have access to employment as the first and preferred option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supported Employment Training Project is housed at the University of Kentucky&#8217;s Human Development Institute and funded by the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Division of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Our goal is to train and support those who provide supported employment services across Kentucky.
