What are Pre-Vocational Services?
Pre-Vocational Services can assist the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) non-student consumers to maximize their vocational potential. Pre-Vocational Services must be requested, and the OVR counselor must preauthorize. Thirty (30) hours of services are available to the approved consumer. The pay is $35 per hour if the services meet the pre-determined need and fall within one of the five service areas:
- Job Exploration: Explores different employment opportunities with consumers to broaden or identify areas of interest and explore any career-related issues.
- Work-Based Learning: Uses the workplace or actual work to provide consumers with the knowledge and skills to help them in future career opportunities. Gains insight into what workplace environments are desired/needed and gives consumers experiences in desired locations.
- Workplace Readiness: Develops skills and behaviors necessary for a job, which are referred to as soft skills, employability skills, or job readiness skills.
- Self-Advocacy: Assist the consumer in advocating for themselves in interviews, on the worksite, regarding self-determination, or in other areas of their life.
- Post-Secondary Counseling: Helps consumers discover and apply for training opportunities. Services can be individual or in conjunction with other services.
A Counselor’s Perspective:
I’ve seen a huge benefit in adding Pre-Vocational services to assist consumers with specific needs. The unique concept is individualized to each consumer. Whether to strengthen the Person-Centered Employment Plan (PCEP), enhance job development delivery, or just a singular service that an individual needs, these services have tremendously successful outcomes when used appropriately. In one instance, Pre-Vocational services were used during job development with a consumer having trouble getting past interviews. It allowed us to set up several mock interviews, ultimately leading to the consumer being successfully employed.”
