TAALC ECHO Collaborative on AAC: Considerations for Vision

Project ECHOTM is an inter-professional practice network where education and/or health care professionals learn together. Short, informative presentations and case discussions conducted during recurring video conferences allow participants to support the individuals they serve by learning new strategies, implementing real-time solutions, improving systems, and removing barriers.
Knowledge sharing “All Teach, All Learn” represents the heart of the ECHO model. Case-based learning and mentor-ship supports local professionals and communities to gain the expertise in an efficient manner. Participants gain knowledge, skills, and confidence for implementing new approaches and using their knowledge and skills across diverse cultural and geographical contexts.
“All Teach, All Learn” means that ALL participants are welcomed to join the conversation, ask questions, share knowledge and experiences, and offer suggestions during each session.
This spring series explores alternate forms of communication for students/clients who do not use oral speech effectively. Specifically, discussions include the range of systems that makeup what is referred to as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Although AAC ranges from low-tech picture boards to high-tech electronic devices, they are all composed of four critical features: a method of access, a form of representation, a display, and some type of output. The purpose of this ECHO series is to identify access factors and the ways in which these access factors influence the decisions regarding AAC selection.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Join an online videoconference bi-weekly with our team of experts including Speech Language Pathologists, General Educators, Low Incidence Educators, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Vision Experts, and Audiologists
- Watch a brief, informative presentation by one of the experts – (15-20 minutes)
- Hear a case presentation by a participating educator or related service provider (15-20 minutes)
- Participate in the discussion and problem-solving process as a community of learners (20-30 minutes)
During each session, a case study will be presented by an educator, therapist, or other service provider who would like assistance problem solving the use of AAC in communication. The case study will include the communication issue the case manager is facing, as well as a general, non-identifying description of the student and the factors impacting their communication. During the case study, participants may ask clarifying questions about the issue prior to the problem-solving process.
